Name Change to Bexar Central Appraisal District
July 9, 2025
At yesterday’s board meeting, the Board of Directors of the Bexar Appraisal District voted to change the name of the district to Bexar Central Appraisal District, effective January 1, 2026.
The name change was approved to better reflect the district’s role as an independent and centralized authority responsible for the uniform appraisal of property for ad valorem tax purposes and exemptions administration across Bexar County. This is an administrative change only and does not affect the district’s legal structure, core responsibilities, or public services.
The updated name aims to enhance public understanding of the district’s role and distinguish it from taxing entities, reinforcing its function as the hub of property valuation for all taxing units in Bexar County. As part of the approved resolution, the Board of Directors noted that the current name does not fully convey the independent and centralized nature of the district’s responsibilities under the Texas Constitution and Property Tax Code.
“The Board of Directors desires to adopt a name that more accurately reflects the independence, core mission, centralized function, and regional identity of Bexar Appraisal District.” the resolution reads.
The updated name will begin appearing on official documents, notices, and digital systems in late 2025. A transition plan is underway to update signage, forms, correspondence, and online platforms. A public information campaign will also be launched to raise awareness of the change. Residents and partner organizations are encouraged to update their records accordingly.
“We are dedicated to making the transition to our new name as smooth as possible without any disruption to our daily operations,” said Rogelio Sandoval, Chief Appraiser. “By adding ‘Central’ to our name, we hope to keep our ‘BCAD’ identity that we’ve been known as while reinforcing that appraisal districts are political subdivisions of the state and completely independent from local taxing jurisdictions.”
