Disability Exemption

  • Are you legally blind, unable to work, and at least 55 years of age?
  • Are you receiving SSI benefits due to being totally blind?
  • Do you own and occupy your home?

If you answered "yes" to more than one of the questions above, then you may qualify for the Disability and General Residential exemptions. The Disability exemption is a reduction of school taxes and you receive $10,000 off your property value. This exemption does not include a school tax freeze. 2. You must not be claiming a Homestead exemption on any other property.
  3. On January 1st you must have been under a disability for the purposes of payment of disability insurance benefits under the Federal Old Age, Survivor's and Disability Insurance Act OR you must meet the definition of disabled in that act.
  4. You must produce a letter from the Social Security Administration or your physician stating that effective date of disability. This letter must be no older than six months.
